My name is Ana Sullivan. I began this website because I love to sew. I live in Santa Barbara and when people find out that I sew, they immediately ask me where I buy fabric with all the stores gone. They are not all gone. The sewing community in Santa Barbara is alive and well. There are crafters, quilters, dressmakers, seamstresses, sewers, sewists, couturiers, stitchers, tailors, fabric artists, etc. Me? Simply put, I sew.
I grew up in a sewing household. I don’t know when I actually started sewing. Having a mother and 3 older sisters who sewed, I just grew up with it. I can remember sewing doll clothes by hand. I then started sewing my doll clothes on the machine by cranking the wheel by hand and “walking” the machine. With my determination my mother finally gave me a shirt to sew for my younger brother. So, my first sewing machine project was a shirt with a collar and sleeves, not to mention pockets and buttons! I soon afterwards made myself a bodice lined dress with a zipper that I proudly wore to elementary school.
Over the years I have continued to sew. I have made clothes for my children and have taught them all to sew. In teaching my youngest to sew, others heard I was teaching. This began my love for teaching sewing as well. I have taught Summer Sewing Camps for years with my daughter. We have conducted several charity events that have brought the community together to sew for a cause.
The sewing world has evolved. People are not as interested in making clothing as they used to be. They want to learn to sew to make small projects and eventually a quilt. So my sewing focus has changed and I have begun making patterns and sewing instructions that are easy to follow. I teach children and adults to sew.
